History of Photoshop

In 1986, in the midst of the PC revolution, Gary Kildall and his employees at Digital Research hired Scott Fahlman and a group of University of California, Berkeley, students to create an image editor, to compete against Microsoft’s presentation program, PowerPoint. The first version was originally named Macromedia.

Kildall’s team slowly added many features, such as layers, undo capability, anti-aliasing and extensive color support, to create the popular program named Photoshop. Before its release, it was called Macromedia Photoshop, and made quite a splash when it was first released in 1987. Not only was it touted as having more features than any other image editor at that time, it also offered a comprehensive suite of tools for graphic artists and designers.

By the mid-1990s, Photoshop was the industry standard for digital image editing. It dominated the graphic arts market.

However, when Creative Labs made a deal with Adobe in 1994 to build Photoshop for the first-generation (DOS/Windows) PC, the two companies publicly announced that every current Macintosh user should expect the same kind of performance in the software. Though Mac users knew their days with Photoshopped-only graphics were numbered, it actually took nearly a year before the company publicly acknowledged that.

Adobe retained the Photoshop name even after the Creative Labs deal. In 2007, Adobe claimed the Photoshop name wasn’t available for use within Creative Suite and therefore not for purchase from third-party vendors.

Software upgrades

The first version of Photoshop was released to the public in 1987. It was immediately more advanced than competing Macintosh image editing software. The program offered a unique user interface, “painter style,” that made it easy to draw and edit shapes and color.

The next version, version 1.0, in 1990 offered a combination of raster and vector features, similar to the original version of Illustrator. In 1991, Adobe introduced the first version of Photoshop for Macintosh. It was a beta version of Photoshop 6, that also began to include vector editing.

This version added many improvements to the program, including a floating-point color adjustment. This enabled the user to add or subtract color in addition to the ability to control tonal balance. It also introduced the perspective grid.

The latest version of Photoshop is version CS6. This version includes many large changes, including a redesigned user interface, all-new workflow, multi-tools and tons of new features

The Pratt & Whitney F100 was an aircraft engine developed in the 1950s. Developed specifically for the F-100 Super Sabre, the prototype of the F-100 fighter, the F100-P-1 was based on the F100-P-110 starter. The F100-P-1 featured a two-spool design incorporating a centrifugal supercharger, and had a maximum continuous power output of 25,000 hp. Production engines used the PFM 100, and were produced in the United States at the time by Pratt & Whitney Canada’s Montreal Engine Division of Canada.

Several problems with the engine motivated General Electric to produce a new engine, the Allison J31, which was certified in November 1958.

The initial F100-P-1 concept was based on a two-spool design incorporating a centrifugal supercharger. The exhaust exited through a centrifugal type supercharger with two turbines and two generators, a rotational speed of 3000 rpm. Centrifugal supercharger technology had been incorporated in the Allison J57, but used multiple inlet and outlet chambers.

The F100-P-1 was
