President’s Message – DCTA’s New Bus Operating and Maintenance Facility
May 23, 2012
The award of an $8.2 million FTA grant to DCTA for the construction of our Bus O&M Facility was a landmark achievement for the agency. This facility will replace the interim facilities co-located with the City of Denton Landfill.
The new facility will be located on Teasley near Shady Oaks in Denton, and includes facilities for repair, maintenance, wash, fueling, parking, and bus operations. The 22,000 square foot facility houses six maintenance bays and administrative office space. This site is large enough to accommodate future needs, and serves bus operations throughout the DCTA service area.
Site planning was completed to mitigate any impacts and address neighborhood concerns. This included the use of extensive landscaping, “cutoff” lighting, and design to orient noise generating bays away from the residential areas.
Environmental consideration was also key to the design. The location itself saves almost 20,000 of fuel and eliminates 217 tons of CO2 emissions annually through more efficient routing of vehicles. An effective stormwater pollution prevention plan will minimize pollution from runoff.
The project is entering the design review process with the City of Denton, and we will work closely with both the City and our neighbors to complete the project by the January 2014.
DCTA’s Bus O&M Facility will greatly enhance our ability to continue providing outstanding bus service. In addition, the facility will provide a better work environment for our valued employees. Over half of our bus operations staff live in Denton. This facility will improve the quality and efficiency of our operations, add a facility we can all be proud of, and improve the quality of the workplace for our team.
