Community Partner Spotlight: Keep Lewisville Beautiful
August 22, 2016
Keeping our community clean has always been a priority for me. Whether that means picking up litter that I see or executing sustainable efforts at home, I’ve always made the upkeep of my community a personal goal. There are so many ways to support a clean and inviting community – it just takes a little research and elbow grease.
I have yet to learn everything that will support a healthy and clean community, but with the help of Keep Lewisville Beautiful I can continue my educational journey and march toward my personal goal. There are so many new things that I want to learn and Keep Lewisville Beautiful is there to help. Here are some of the things that I hope to learn in the coming months.
How to Garden
If you’re anything like me, you have a brown thumb. I’m lucky if I can keep a basic house plant alive. But Keep Lewisville Beautiful offers free Garden Secrets classes led by Denton County Master Gardeners and The Texas Agrilife Extension Office – which are sure to turn that brown thumb green!
Some of the upcoming classes include:
- Thursday, September 1 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on keyhole gardening
- Thursday, October 6 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on wildflowers, butterflies and pollinators
- Thursday, October 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on composting
All classes are held in Classroom 1 at the MCL Grand located at 100 N. Charles Street in Old Town Lewisville. Residency is not required, but seats are limited. To RSVP for the next Garden Secrets class, call 972.538.5949 or email info@keeplewisvillebeautiful.org.
How to Restore Trails
I happen to have a very large backyard with a trail nearby. I have wanted to restore my backyard and create a connection to the public trail – but I’ve never known how to start. Keep Lewisville Beautiful is partnering with the Lewisville Independent School District Outdoor Learning Area (LISDOLA) on Saturday, October 22 for Make a Difference Day – a day dedicated to trail maintenance, wild flower planting and restoration. Who said you can’t volunteer and learn new skills at the same time?
Light breakfast snacks will be served and volunteers will receive a free Keep Lewisville Beautiful t-shirt and bluebonnet seeds on a first come first served basis. Make a Difference Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at LISDOLA, located at 101 Holford’s Prairie/Fish Hatchery Road in Lewisville. To RSVP for Make a Difference Day, call 972.538.5949 or email info@keeplewisvillebeautiful.org.
How to Trash It
As I’ve said before, I’m all about throwing away found litter. But you should see me at home where I keep multiple trash and recycle bins to keep our trash and recyclables organized and clean. On Saturday, November 12 from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., you can join in on the fun by attending Keep Lewisville Beautiful’s 8th Annual Trinity Trash Bash – a citywide cleanup day and Texas Arbor Day celebration.
Light breakfast snacks will be served and volunteers will receive a goody bag, a Keep Lewisville Beautiful t-shirt (first come first served), entrance to the Environmental Expo and Texas Arbor Day Celebration, and the chance to win some amazing door prizes. The Trinity Trash Bash will be held at Lake Park in Lewisville. To register for this event, call 972.538.5949 or sign up online at http://www.keeplewisvillebeautiful.org/trinity_trash_bash.html.
It takes a village to keep our community clean and Keep Lewisville Beautiful is helping guide our village one day at a time through service and education. For more information, to volunteer or to sponsor Keep Lewisville Beautiful, call 972.538.5949.
