Fun Things to Do in August!

This month is packed with plenty of entertainment and activities across Denton County. From broncos to balloons, August is the time to get in the last of that summer fun before school starts! DCTA is here to help you get to all of these exciting events:
UNT on the Square Art Exhibits
UNT on the Square will is hosting two exhibits this month. The first will be on display from Tuesday, August 1, to Saturday, August 12, and will consist of photographs taken by Richard Orton of a family in an East Texas community. Their community’s purpose was to be a home for former slaves during a time when the Jim Crow laws posed a threat. The second exhibit will go from Thursday, August 17, to Saturday, September 30, and will consist of forty different tapestries from all over the world. Admission for both exhibits is FREE. All exhibits run from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays; and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Rachel Caine Author Event at Lewisville Public Library
The Lewisville Public Library will be hosting author Rachel Caine on Saturday, August 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. Caine is the author of more than 50 novels, but is best known for the Morganville Vampire series, Prince of Shadows, and the Weather Warden Series. The FREE event is open to adults AND teens entering grades six through 12, and you can get there by riding Lewisville Connect Route 22. Denton Community Market
The Denton Community Market is a producer-only farmer’s and art market that takes place at the Denton County Historical Park. The market features live music, kid’s activities, local farmers, local artists, food trucks, and more! The Denton Community Market will occur every Saturday from April to November 2017 from 9AM-1PM. North Texas Fair and Rodeo
The North Texas State Fair Association presents Denton’s Annual North Texas Fair and Rodeo which will feature a world championship rodeo, entertainment from the best Texas Country musicians, carnival rides and games, fiddling contest, petting zoos and barbecue cook-offs! The fair will take place at the North Texas Fairgrounds from Friday, August 18 through Saturday, August 26. Ride the A-train and take Denton Connect Route 4 to get to all the rowdy fun. Highland Village Balloon Festival
The 30th Annual Highland Village Balloon Festival. The festival will be held Friday, August 18, through Sunday, August 20, and will feature fun for the entire family! Enjoy the wiener dog races, kid zone, live bands, car show, 5k run, food, arts and crafts, and of course the iconic hot air balloons. Ride DCTA’s free shuttle service that will operate from 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on both Friday, August 18, and Saturday, August 19. One bus will shuttle passengers from the Highland Village/Lewisville Lake Station to Briarhill Middle School every 20 minutes and another bus will shuttle passengers from Marcus High School to Briarhill Middle School every 10 minutes.
